Miss World 2011 – Ivian Sarcos

The 61st edition of the Miss World pageant took place at the Earls Court Two on 6th of November 2011 in London.

Delegates from 113 countries and territories competed for the title of Miss World 2011 this year in London.

At the end of the competition Miss Venezuela, Ivian Sarcos was crowned the 61st Miss World 2011 taking over the reign of Alexandria Mills, Miss World 2010. Ivian Sarcos was crowned by Miss World 2010.

The first runner-up was 20-year-old Gwendoline Ruais of Philippines.

The second runner-up was Amanda Perez of Puerto Rico.

The 15 semi finalists included Indonesia, Korea, Italy, Sweden, Zimbabwe, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Venezuela, Philippines, US VI, Spain, Puerto Rico, South Africa, Scotland and England.

Miss Venezuela was also crowned as the first runner up in Miss International 2011.

After a tough competition Miss Angola, Leila Lopes was announced as Miss Universe 2011, taking over the reign of Ximena Navarrete, Miss Universe and Miss Mexico 2010. At the end of the event Ximena Navarrete of Mexico crowned her successor, Leila Lopes of Angola.

An African beauty has not been crowned Miss Universe since 1999, when Miss Botswana, Mpule Kwelagobe, took the crown.

Responding to questions, Lopes said that she has never had cosmetic surgery of any kind and that her three tips for beauty were

  2. Use sunscreen even when it’s not sunny
  3. To drink lots of water

She said her smile was her best weapon in the competition.

The first runner-up in the competition was 23-year-old Olesia Stefanko of Ukraine.

The second runner-up was Priscila Machado of Brazil.

In this modern world no one wishes to be looking fat, People are ready to face all the challenges to become lean, some are taking advantage over this and started earning money out of this by giving ideas which may even cause hazard than good.

1. If I sharply reduce my calories, I will lose weight faster

When you try to cut your calories severely, your metabolism gets slow rather than speeding up by making it more difficult to lose weight. Avoid starving yourself.

2. You have to work out two hours a day, every day at a high intensity to lose weight

Not a true fact. Studies show that 30-60 minutes of moderate exercises like brisk walking or jogging is far enough to stay fit with a healthy intake of food.

3. You Can Burn More Fat Exercising on an Empty Stomach

Blood glucose will be low on an empty stomach when fasting, but you need glucose when you exercise.

If you fail to eat before a workout session; you risk muscle protein being converted to glucose to maintain a critical level of blood glucose.

Hence it is best to have some toast or energy bar or fruit juice or sports drink to give your blood glucose a little boost before you work out thereby preventing the use of muscle for energy.

4. If I drastically cut calories, I’ll lose weight faster

This is just the same as we discussed in first point. When you calorie intake is low, your body moves into Starvation mode through which your metabolism will actually slow down and you may not lose weight.

Miss USA 2011

The 60th anniversary of the Miss USA pageant, was at the Theatre for the Performing Arts in Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada on 19th of June 2011.

51 of the most beautiful women in the world were competing for the title of Miss USA 2011 this year in Nevada.

For the first time ever, one of the sixteen semifinalists was selected exclusively by fans via online voting and SMS messaging. Due to this, the competition formats were changed to Top 16, Top 8 and Top 4.

At the end of the competition Alyssa Campanella of California was announced as Miss USA 2011, taking over the reign of Rima Fakih of Michigan, Miss USA 2010 who crowned Miss USA 2011.

Vishu – the new year festival

Today is Keralites important festival Vishu, let me tell you something about Vishu and the way we celebrated it in our house.

Vishu is a New Year festival celebrated all over in Kerala during the first month of Chingam, the harvest season in Kerala.

The most important event Vishukkani is inseperable from Vishu, the first thing to be seen on the day of Vishu immediately after you wake up.

Vishukkani consists of a formal procedure of arranging items like

  • raw rice
  • lemon
  • cucumber (should be in golden colour)
  • betel leaves
  • fruits you wish
  • coconut
  • val beans
  • konnapoo(konna flowers)
  • Metal mirror
  • coins, rupee notes
  • gold and Nilavillaku(lamp)

Some will keep all these in a uruli(vessel).It is a belief that an auspicious kani sight in the crack of dawn on the Vishu day would prove lucky for the entire year. Hence, Vishukkani is prepared with lot of care to make it the most pleasing and positive sight.

Usually Vishukkani will be prepared on the night before Vishu. The elder woman in the house wakes up early and will lit the lamps by closing her eyes.

She opens her eyes to take a look at the golden scene that spreads in front by the reflection from the cucumber, gold ornaments, bronze mirror, kanikonna flower clusters and the image of Balagopala.

After her Kanikanal gets over, she wakes up other family members one by one and guides them to the Pooja Room to see Kani.

The children are brought keeping their eyes covered by her loving hand or a cloth to prevent them from opening the eyes and see the mundane before seeing the divine.

If people have cattle, thodi(Garden) at home means they will take the Kani uruli finally around the house three times.

The elder one in the family will give Kaineetam to the younger ones.

The kaineetam consists of giving money along with betel leaves, Konna flowers, rice and gold where the rice, betel leaves, Konna flowers and gold are returned.

Vishu Saddhya

Saddhya(food) is a major part of all Kerala festivals. But for Vishu, Vishu Kanji and Thoran are more important. The Kanji is made of rice, coconut milk and spices.

All types of tastes should be prepared on that day. Many will prepare Veppampoo rasam(bitter), mango pachadi(sour), pradhaman(sweet), pappadam(salt).

If you desire to wish people in Malayalam spell it as “Yende hrudhayam neranja Vishu dhina aashamshagal”.

How To Sleep Better

Nothing is more annoying than not being able to sleep. Tossing and turning. Your mind will be racing, going over everything that happened recently, night noises may keep you awake. What can you do? There are things you can do to get a nice sleep! Here are some new tricks to sleep well.
These tips are also known as “Sleep Hygiene.”

  1. Sleep only when you feel sleepy.
  2. If you are unable to feel asleep within 20 minutes, then get up and do something tiresome until you feel sleepy.

  1. Avoid having a heavy sleep during day time.
  2. Get up and go to bed the same time every day, i.e. that is fix up a schedule and get on to it.
  3. Regular exercise is recommended to help you sleep well.

  1. Exercising during morning hours or early afternoon will not come in contact with sleep.
  2. Avoid doing exercise at least 4 hours before your bedtime.
  3. Develop sleep rituals by hearing a relaxing music, reading something soothing for 15 minutes, having a cup of caffeine free tea, doing some relaxation exercises.

  1. Try to have a light snack before bed, sometimes empty stomach may interfere with sleep but remember not to eat heavy meals before bedtime that can also interfere as well.

  4. If light in the early morning troubles you, get a blackout shade or wear a sleep mask.
